For decades, the only way to answer a paternity question before birth involved a needle and a genuine risk to the pregnancy. Today, that is almost never necessary. Here is what invasive prenatal paternity testing actually involves, the risks it carries, and why a simple blood draw has replaced it for most families.
What "invasive" prenatal testing means
Invasive prenatal testing collects fetal genetic material directly from inside the uterus. Because an instrument has to enter the womb, these procedures carry medical risk and must be performed by an OB-GYN or maternal-fetal medicine specialist. There are two:
- Amniocentesis, which samples the amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby
- Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), which samples tissue from the developing placenta
Both were originally designed to screen for chromosomal and genetic conditions, not to establish paternity. They can produce a fetal DNA profile, but for paternity that profile is a byproduct, not the purpose of the procedure.
Amniocentesis
Performed at roughly 15 to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Guided by ultrasound, the doctor passes a thin needle through the abdomen into the amniotic sac and withdraws a small amount of fluid. That fluid contains cells shed by the baby, which supply the fetal DNA used for testing.
Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
Performed earlier, at about 10 to 13 weeks. The doctor collects a small sample of chorionic villi (tiny projections of placental tissue that share the baby's genetic makeup) either through the abdomen with a needle or through the cervix with a thin catheter, again under ultrasound guidance.
The risk that changes everything
Both procedures carry a small but real risk of miscarriage. Modern estimates place it in the range of roughly 1 in 300 to 1 in 900 procedures, though older figures cited numbers closer to 1 in 100. They can also cause cramping, spotting, leakage of amniotic fluid, or infection.
Important: Because of this risk, medical guidelines are clear that amniocentesis and CVS should be performed for medical reasons, such as screening for a genetic or chromosomal condition, not for paternity alone. A reputable OB-GYN will not perform an invasive procedure solely to answer a paternity question when a zero-risk alternative exists.
The safe modern alternative: non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP)
A non-invasive prenatal paternity test needs nothing more than a simple blood draw from the mother and a cheek swab from the alleged father. During pregnancy, fragments of the baby's DNA circulate naturally in the mother's bloodstream. The lab isolates those fragments and compares them against the alleged father's profile.
- Zero risk to the baby, because nothing enters the womb
- Available as early as 7 to 8 weeks of pregnancy
- 99.9%+ accuracy when the alleged father is the biological father
- No doctor referral, hospital visit, or procedure required
The non-invasive prenatal paternity test is the right choice for the overwhelming majority of families with a paternity question during pregnancy.

Is there ever a reason to use invasive testing for paternity?
Occasionally, but only when the mother is already undergoing amniocentesis or CVS for a medical reason. If the procedure is happening anyway to screen for a genetic condition, the sample it produces can sometimes also be used to establish paternity, with no additional risk to the pregnancy. That procedure would be performed by her OB-GYN, not by us. Our role would be limited to the paternity analysis of a sample her doctor collects. It is the exception, not the rule.

If you need to confirm paternity before the baby arrives, start with the non-invasive option. It answers the question accurately, early, and without putting the pregnancy at risk. If you have already been advised to have an invasive procedure for medical reasons, ask your doctor whether that sample can also be used for paternity, and talk to us about handling the analysis.
