Bringing a newborn home is overwhelming enough. The last thing new parents should have to do is bundle up a days-old baby, drive across town, and sit in a waiting room just to get a DNA test. With mobile newborn DNA testing, you do not have to. Our certified technicians come to your home, do a painless cheek swab, and are gone in about twenty minutes, so your baby never has to leave the house.
You should never have to take a newborn out for a DNA test
A newborn's first weeks are for resting, feeding, and bonding, not for errands. Yet many DNA testing options still expect you to load the baby into a car seat and travel to a clinic or lab. For a brand-new baby, that means:
- Exposure to a waiting room full of other people during cold, flu, and RSV season
- Disrupting a feeding and sleep schedule that is barely established
- Asking a mother who is still recovering from delivery to get up and leave home
- The stress of a first outing before your family is ready for one
None of that is necessary. Newborn DNA testing can come to you. That is the entire idea behind our mobile service, and it matters most for the youngest, most fragile patients we see.
How at-home newborn DNA testing works
Mobile newborn DNA collection is simple, and the baby barely notices it:
- You call or text, and we schedule a visit around your baby's routine, often the same day or the next.
- A certified technician arrives at your home in an unmarked vehicle.
- The technician gently brushes a soft cotton swab against the inside of the baby's cheek for a few seconds. That is the entire collection.
- We do the same for the alleged father, and the mother if she is included, complete any paperwork, and go.
- Samples are sent to our AABB-accredited lab partner, and results come back in a few business days.
The whole appointment takes about twenty minutes, and your newborn stays exactly where they belong: at home with you.
Is a cheek swab safe for a newborn?
Yes. A buccal (cheek) swab is completely painless and safe from the day your baby is born. There are no needles and no blood, just a soft swab collecting loose cells from the inside of the cheek. Most babies sleep right through it. For a closer look at safety, see our guide on whether DNA testing is safe for a newborn or infant.
One small tip: we usually recommend waiting about 30 minutes after a feeding, so there is no milk or formula residue in the mouth that could affect the sample.
The at-home advantage for new parents
Choosing in-home newborn DNA testing over a clinic trip means:
- Your baby never leaves home. No car seat, no waiting room, no exposure to other people's germs.
- You test on your schedule. We work around feedings and naps, evenings and weekends, 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week.
- Mom can rest. A recovering parent does not have to get dressed and drive anywhere.
- Total privacy. Our technician arrives in an unmarked vehicle. What happens at your home stays your business.
- Everyone in one visit. If the alleged father, mother, and baby are all home, we collect from everyone at once.
Legal and peace-of-mind newborn tests both come to you
Whether you need a court-admissible result or simply want to know for yourself, both options are available as a mobile, in-home visit:
- Peace-of-mind newborn test for your own knowledge. Simple, private, and no paperwork.
- Legal newborn test for custody, child support, adding a father to the birth certificate, or other court matters. We verify IDs and follow AABB chain-of-custody procedures, right in your living room. Learn more about our legal DNA test.
How soon after birth can you test a newborn?
There is no minimum age. A cheek swab can be done the day the baby comes home from the hospital, or even at the hospital in many cases. If you want an answer before delivery, a non-invasive prenatal paternity test uses a simple blood draw from the mother and is available as early as 7 weeks. Once the baby has arrived, an in-home cheek swab is the fastest and easiest path to a result.
Can you collect at the hospital?
Often, yes. If you are still at the hospital or a birth center after delivery, we can usually arrange collection there, subject to the facility's policies. Many families prefer to wait until they are settled at home, which is exactly what our mobile service is built for.
What to have ready before we arrive
- The baby, fed about 30 minutes beforehand if possible
- Photo ID for the adults, if it is a legal test
- A calm spot to sit for a few minutes
That is all. We bring everything else.
