If you built your family through a US surrogate, the birth is only half of the paperwork. Your baby is a US citizen, but your home country usually needs its own proof before it will recognize the child as yours, and that proof is almost always a DNA test showing your genetic link to the baby. We handle that collection with the legal, AABB-accredited, chain-of-custody process that embassies and courts require, and we come to you anywhere in Southern California. From your first call to the final report, we keep the whole experience professional and completely discreet, closer to a private concierge service than a trip to a lab.
Why the DNA result matters once you go home
Your baby being born in the US does not automatically make the child a citizen of your country. On the home-country side, a positive DNA result is often what unlocks everything that follows:
- Citizenship and a passport from your country. This is the big one. To pass on citizenship and issue the baby a passport, your embassy or consulate often wants proof that at least one parent is biologically related to the child. This comes up constantly with surrogacy births.
- Registering the birth back home. Many countries will not simply accept a US birth certificate that names the intended parents, especially countries where surrogacy is restricted. DNA proof of the genetic link is often what gets the birth recorded.
- Court recognition of parentage. In some countries a court has to recognize the parents before it counts. The UK, for example, requires at least one parent to be genetically related to grant a parental order, and a positive DNA result is usually central to that case.
- Second-parent adoption. If only one parent is the genetic parent, the DNA result establishes that parent first. The other parent may then complete an adoption at home.
- Inheritance, benefits, and insurance. These come up later, when your country needs proof of the relationship for estate rights, government benefits, or adding the child to a family health or insurance plan.
- Peace of mind on the IVF. Some parents and attorneys simply want confirmation that the clinic transferred the right embryo before the post-birth paperwork is finalized.
This needs to be a legal, AABB-accredited test
For anything official, an at-home kit will not be accepted. Embassies, consulates, and courts require a legal test, which means:
- Verified identities. Every participant's photo ID is checked and documented.
- Witnessed collection. A neutral, certified technician collects each sample. No one handles their own.
- Documented chain of custody. Each sample is sealed, labeled, and tracked from collection to our AABB-accredited lab partner.
- A defensible report. The result comes with documentation that a court, consulate, or registrar can rely on.
You can read more about how this works on our legal DNA test page. We are also glad to coordinate directly with your surrogacy attorney, agency, or consulate on how they want the report formatted and delivered. If you work with an attorney, point them to our information for attorneys.
How it works when you are in Southern California for the birth
Many intended parents travel to California for the delivery, which is exactly what our mobile service is built for. While you are here:
- You call or text us and tell us what the result is for: which country, embassy, court, or attorney.
- We come to your hospital, hotel, rental, or home and collect a painless cheek swab from the baby and from the genetic parent or parents.
- We verify IDs and seal every sample under full chain of custody.
- Samples go to our AABB-accredited lab partner.
- You receive a documented, court-and-embassy-ready result in a few business days.
Nobody has to take a newborn to a clinic, and you can stay focused on your baby.
What if one genetic parent is still abroad?
Sometimes the genetic parent cannot travel for the birth. We can still help. We collect from the baby, and from any parent who is here, under chain of custody, and we coordinate a witnessed collection for the parent abroad, often through an approved facility or your country's consulate, so the entire case stays legally valid. Call us and we will map out the cleanest path for your situation. For more on long-distance testing, see our guide on testing when someone lives far away.
Every country and consulate is different
Requirements vary widely from one country to the next. The UK requires at least one parent to be genetically related for a parental order. Other countries want the DNA result in hand before they will register the birth or issue a passport. Before anything is scheduled, confirm with your consulate or surrogacy attorney exactly what they require: which parent must be tested, whether the lab must be AABB-accredited, and how they want the report delivered. Then we build the test to match, and we are happy to speak with your attorney or agency directly.
A discreet, concierge-level experience
Surrogacy is personal, and so is this step. We treat it that way. Our service is designed to feel less like a lab appointment and more like a private concierge handling one important detail for you, with discretion at every step:
- We come to you. Collection at your hospital, hotel, rental, or home across Southern California, including the Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino county areas. You never wait in a clinic with a newborn.
- Private and low profile. Our certified technician arrives in an unmarked vehicle, on your schedule, and keeps the visit calm and brief. What happens stays confidential.
- Professional and credentialed. A neutral, certified technician, full chain of custody, and an AABB-accredited lab partner behind every result.
- We handle the coordination. We work directly with your attorney, agency, or consulate on timing, formatting, and delivery, so your paperwork is never the thing holding you up.
- On your terms. Hablamos Espanol, evenings and weekends available, and fast turnaround to keep the rest of your post-birth process moving.
Frequently asked questions
Our baby was born in the US, so why do we need a DNA test?
US citizenship is automatic for a baby born here, but your home country usually needs its own proof before it will grant citizenship, issue a passport, or register the birth. With surrogacy, that proof is almost always a DNA test showing the genetic link between you and your child.
Does the test need to be a legal test?
Yes. Embassies, consulates, and courts require a legal, AABB-accredited test with verified IDs and an unbroken chain of custody. An at-home kit will not be accepted for citizenship, a passport, or a parental order.
Who gets tested?
The baby and the genetic parent or parents, meaning the egg provider and the sperm provider. We help you confirm with your consulate or attorney exactly who must be tested for your country.
Can you come to the hospital or our hotel?
Yes. We bring mobile, chain-of-custody collection to your hospital, hotel, rental, or home anywhere in Southern California.
What if one genetic parent is overseas?
We collect from the baby and any parent here under chain of custody, and coordinate a witnessed collection for the parent abroad, often through an approved facility or the consulate, so the whole case stays legally valid.
How fast is it and how much does it cost?
Results are usually ready in a few business days. Cost depends on the number of participants, and mobile collection is included at no extra charge within our service area. See our pricing page or call us for a quote.
