Most DNA paternity tests follow a predictable timeline, but the actual time from "I want a test" to "here's my result" depends on more than just lab processing. Here's the realistic breakdown.
The standard timeline
From start to finish, a typical paternity test runs:
- Day 0: You schedule the appointment (often same-day or next-day available)
- Day of appointment: Sample collection at your location
- Days +1–2: Samples reach the lab
- Days +3–5 at the lab: DNA extraction, STR analysis, quality control
- Day of report: Results delivered to you electronically
Total: typically 3–5 business days at the lab, plus 1–2 days for sample transit. Most clients have their results within a week of their appointment.
Step 1: Scheduling (same day to 1 week)
With a mobile DNA service, scheduling is usually fast. We can often get out to you within 24–72 hours, sometimes same-day for nearby locations.
What can slow this down:
- Multi-party coordination (mother in one city, father in another)
- Legal tests requiring ID for all parties (everyone needs to have valid government ID on the day)
- Specific date requests around work or court schedules
Step 2: Collection (15–30 minutes)
The actual swab is fast. A buccal swab takes about 30 seconds per person. The total appointment runs 15–30 minutes because of:
- ID verification (for legal tests)
- Paperwork (chain of custody for legal tests)
- Photo documentation (for legal tests)
- Minor's identity confirmation with guardian
- Sealing and labeling samples
Step 3: Lab processing (3–5 business days)
This is where most of the time goes. The lab needs to:
- Receive and log samples
- Extract DNA from the cheek cells
- Amplify specific STR markers via PCR
- Analyze the markers
- Compare profiles and calculate probability
- Quality control review
- Generate the report
Our AABB-accredited lab partner consistently delivers in 3–5 business days from sample arrival. This is the standard for paternity, maternity, sibling, grandparent, and avuncular tests.
Important: We don't offer "expedited" or "rush" turnaround. Our lab partner consistently delivers in 3–5 business days for standard tests and 5–7 business days for prenatal NIPP.
Prenatal (NIPP) tests take a bit longer
Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity tests follow a different timeline:
- NIPP lab processing: 5–7 business days from sample arrival
- Total typical time from collection to result: about a week and a half
NIPP is more complex because the lab has to isolate fetal DNA fragments from the mother's blood, then match them against the alleged father's DNA. This extra step adds processing time.
What can extend the timeline
- Sample issues: If a sample is contaminated or insufficient, the lab may request recollection (adds 5+ days)
- Inconclusive markers: In rare cases, the lab tests additional markers to clarify a result
- Weekends and holidays: Labs typically don't process on weekends, so a Friday collection effectively starts processing Monday
- Pending payment: Some labs hold results until payment is confirmed
- Hardcopy delivery: If you request a physical certificate, add mail transit time
What you can do to speed it up
- Schedule promptly: Same-week appointments are usually available, but multi-party coordination takes longer if you wait
- Confirm everyone has ID (for legal tests) before the appointment so there are no day-of delays
- Choose electronic delivery instead of mailed hardcopy
- Collect on a Monday or Tuesday so the lab gets samples mid-week and can process all five business days
From collection to result: 3–5 business days for standard paternity tests, 5–7 business days for prenatal NIPP. Plus 1–2 days for sample transit to the lab.
